bilge cleaner (A) 3000

Product description:

  • BIOTAL bilge cleaner (A) 3000 is a “bilge friendly” product to be used as a cleaner for bilges, oily waste tanks and oily water separators to reduce hydrocarbon contamination through biodegradation.
  • It is an effective cleaner that “breaks” quickly on dilution to allow the oil to “separate out”, making it bilge friendly.
  • Used as part of a regular cleaning programe it can eliminate hydrocarbon build up, reducing the requirement to clean the bilge, pump the oily waste tank and clean the oily water separator.
  • It can be used against all petroleum hydrocarbons encountered in ships bilges.

How it works:

The cleaning technology

  • The cleaning surfactant in BIOTAL bilge cleaner (A) 3000 lifts and emulsifies oils and greasy deposits so that the removal of hydrocarbon contamination occurs in the rinsing process.
  • The BIOTAL bilge cleaner (A) 3000 cleaning surfactant is also quick breaking; when the solution reaches the bilges, the emulsion is unstable which helps the oil separate out from the water.
  • “Cleaning” and “breaking” quickly are critical capabilities, since surfactants that do not break quickly will cause emulsification in bilges. This will have a detrimental knock on effect for the OWS (Oily Water Seperation), as emulsified oils reaching it can cause serious problems with its operational efficiency.
  • The cleaning surfactant in BIOTAL bilge cleaner 3000 has been formulated after screening many hundreds of formulae in order to obtain the best compromise between emulsifying properties for effective cleaning performance and quick break capability for OWS friendliness.

Biodegradation:

The product contains bacteria with two capabilities:

  • The first function is to degrade a wide variety of surfactant molecules which can enter the bilges from cleaning operations or spillages. Once these surfactants are degraded, the emulsion is no longer stable and normal oil and water separation processes can occur more effectively.
  • The second function of the bacteria is to degrade any emulsified oil that is already present in the water .
    • Emulsified oil is in an ideal form for biodegradation to occur.
    • In the emulsion the oil is in small droplets, and is thus highly accessible to the bacteria that live in the water fraction.
    • The oil degrading bacteria are therefore able to mop up any emulsified oil that has not been released by the degradation of the surfactants.
